This template can be used to design commemorative stamps to celebrate special events such as Easter or Christmas. It can be used to design stamps featuring different states or countries, national flowers or historical figures that children have been learning about. As mentioned above, it can also be used as part of an art project to encourage children to use artistic ability. Furthermore, it provides a brilliant activity for World Post Day, complementing learning about the development of communications and letter writing.
How to turn kids’ art into real-sized postage stamps
A bonus DIY craft project! If you would like to turn your child or grandchild’s design into an actual-sized postage stamp, print the activity page at 100% scale before it is used. Also, remember that colouring pencils and felt tip pens that are used need to be strong enough to show up at a smaller scale.
Once your child or grandchild has completed his or her design, you can turn the design into a real-sized postage stamp by following these guidelines:
- Use a dark marker pen to go over the outlines of the postage stamp on the activity page (or on a photocopy if you would like to preserve the original) in order to prevent the lines from becoming too faint when the size of the stamp is reduced.
- Scan the page into your computer.
- In software such as Microsoft Word, crop your image so that the borders of the image are in line with the edges of the pink rectangle around the postage stamp.
- Reduce your cropped image to be 24mm wide by 27mm high (so that the stamp inside is 22mm by 25mm).
- Copy and paste the image as many times as you want according to how many stamps you want to create.
- Print at 100% scale.
- Cut out the postage stamps (cut closely around the perforations using fine scissors or a pen cutting tool if you want to make them more realistic).
The miniature postage stamps can then be used in an art display, postal play / post office role play or even saved in a DIY stamp book!
