The relationship between grandparents and grandchildren is a special one and the list of ways for them to bond could be both varied and endless. Nevertheless, we have come up with a simple list of ways for grandparents and grandchildren to bond with each other.
- Teach children new skills
- Play games together
- Read stories together
- Work on a craft project together
- Talk about memories
Teach children new skills
Learning new skills is an exciting part of children’s development and there are so many different skills that children can learn, from photography to engineering and birdwatching to baking. Learning such skills from grandparents can be a great way for grandparents and grandchildren to bond, especially when grandparents are sharing skills for which they have love and talent.

Play games together
Playing games together creates natural opportunities for conversation and fun. At Many Joyful Things we offer games for a wide range of ages, from young children to older adults. We also offer games for different numbers of players, which can be played by just one grandparent and one grandchild or multiple grandparents and grandchildren.
Read stories together
Reading books together can provide further bonding time for grandparents and grandchildren, in which grandchildren can listen to their grandparents’ voices reading them stories as well as going on a journey of discovery and learning with them. These moments can also give grandparents opportunity to talk to their grandchildren about the characters’ development and situations that might be relevant to the children’s own lives. At Many Joyful Things we provide printable picture books in our Edmund and Joy range that can be read by young children with their grandparents.
Work on a craft project together
Crafting together involves working collaboratively on a project to make something nice, which is a great opportunity for bonding. It also produces something which can be enjoyed by the grandparents and grandchildren afterwards, or perhaps given as a gift. Many of our products at Many Joyful Things offer opportunities for crafting through the colouring, cutting and assembling of our books and games. The amount of adult supervision can also be varied according to the age of the children and the level of crafting can be adjusted according to how much crafting they want to do (for example, you can choose between colour and colouring versions of our products and you can use crafting tools to produce different and more elaborate results).
Talk about memories
Bonding with grandchildren can also happen through talking about memories that have been made together and remembering these good times fondly, as well as sharing stories with each other from times spent apart. This can be done through good old conversation or it can be facilitated by photo albums, scrapbooking and journalling.
